Development Engineering
Successful community solar projects begin with disciplined early-stage engineering. Canning Engineers supports developers from site feasibility through permit-ready design, ensuring each project is optimized for performance, constructability, and regulatory compliance.
Using PVCase and AutoCAD, we develop optimized layouts, preliminary single-line diagrams, and equipment selections aligned with utility and AHJ requirements. Early-stage energy modeling and constraint analysis help reduce development risk and position projects for successful interconnection and financing.
Construction/IFC Design
We deliver detailed, build-ready Issued for Construction (IFC) drawing packages tailored for distributed generation and community solar applications. Our documentation includes final single-line and three-line diagrams, grounding and bonding plans, conductor and conduit schedules, protection schemes, and construction specifications.
Using ETAP, we perform load flow analysis, short-circuit studies, and protection coordination to support project closeout.
We provide designs which are not only code-compliant but utility-aligned, financially optimized, and coordinated for efficient field execution. Our portfolio-scale experience informs standardized yet flexible design approaches that reduce RFIs and minimize change orders during construction.
Construction Administration
We can review and approve submittals, coordinate shop drawing reviews, and perform site inspections as needed or required.
PVSYST/Energy Modeling
Energy modeling is central financing, optimization, and long-term asset performance in community solar. We provide detailed production modeling using PVSYST, delivering P50, P90, and P99 energy estimates, loss diagrams, and sensitivity analyses.
Our modeling approach is informed by industry-leading expertise and partnerships, refining assumptions related to soiling, temperature losses, and transposition models. This data- and experience-driven methodology provides developers and asset owners with accurate, defensible forecasts aligned with operating realities.
Arc-Flash and Short-Circuit Studies
We use ETAP to perform Short Circuit Analysis, Time Current Coordination Curve Studies, and AC and DC Arc Flash Studies.
Utility Interconnection
From initial applications through to witness testing, interconnection is often the defining challenge in distributed generation. We provide comprehensive engineering support from pre-application screening through study review, Impact Study, and final approval to energize.
Our services include preparation of compliant interconnection applications, development of protection and control documentation, effective grounding calculations, and direct coordination with utility engineers.
Owner’s Engineering
As Owner’s Engineer, we serve as an independent technical advocate protecting project value across development, construction, and commissioning. Our oversight ensures alignment between design intent, contractual requirements, and long-term performance objectives.
Services include technical due diligence, design and constructability reviews, energy model validation, interconnection study assessment, field inspections, and commissioning support. We specialize in complex projects where disciplined engineering leadership and coordinated project management are essential.
